Is Ageism a Problem in Our Society?
Many people have witnessed ageism which affects people of all ages yet it is an issue which can often be overlooked as a serious problem. Many young people believe that they are misrepresented in the media as idle yobs and people may be prejudiced against them because of the clothes that they wear. Similarly, many older people feel that they are underappreciated and they are judged as having limited technological skills.
"I don't like ageism and I think that with practice we can break the barriers between the different ages," Carluke High School's Depute Head, Mr Farquarson explained.
Miss Hamilton, a social subject teacher at the school explained how we can overcome this age barrier. "If we raise awareness and work together to understand each others point of view we can beat ageism. Young people are underestimated due to their lack of experience. However, they bring something else to the table."
Ageism occurs because of preconceived ideas. Like many other prejudices this problem must be overcome.
