School Report Day 26 March 2009

Lizard Attack

A fruit picker was mauled to death by two Komodo Dragons on Tuesday 24th March 2009. The 31 year old Muhammad Anwar fell out of a sugar apple tree on Komodo Island in eastern Indonesia. He was attacked minutes after the fall by two awaiting Komodo Dragons.

He was found by Kosmas Jalang who said, "Mr Anwar was left bleeding badly from bites to his hands, body, legs and neck."

He died in a clinic on a neighbouring island called Flores, soon afterwards.

LizardAttacks on humans by Komodo Dragons are rare but have increased in recent years. They can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh as much as 150 pounds.

In 2007 an 8 year old boy died after being mauled and a park ranger survived a similar attack on 25th February 2009.

The latest mauling came after a zoo in Indonesia celebrated the birth of 32 Komodo Dragons not long ago. There are still 14 eggs incubating at the zoo.
