The Intermediate 2 Mathematics course provides essential skills for taking Maths further in the world of work or future study. Intermediate 2 maths will give the learner confidence when dealing with number work in real life. It will encourage abstract thinking, model real-life situations and make generalisations and helps provide skills needed to interpret and analyse information, assess risk and make informed decisions.

The course comprises two compulsory units (unit 1 and 2) and an optional third unit (either unit 3 or 4).

Assessment
To gain the overall award students must pass written assessments in all three units of the course and an external assessment. The SQA external exam consists of 2 papers - one calculator, one non-calculator. A prelim, which is of the same form as the SQA external exam, takes place under exam conditions in February for S5 and November for S4. To progress to the final exam pupils must achieve at least 40% in their prelim exam.
Progression
Students may progress to Higher Mathematics if they attain a strong Intermediate 2 Mathematics award (A or B pass), which must include Unit 3. The course may also serve as an entry requirement to further education.
