S2 Being My Best

Eleven second year pupils signed up to take part in this extra-curricular activity which is aimed at preparing them for study at university or college. Each pupil attended four sessions in the library taken by Mrs Magnus, Miss Breslin and Mrs Martin. The pupils were introduced to learning styles, planning and research skills, strategies on how to effectively use the internet and completed a self perception questionnaire.

All the pupils were expected to research and complete an investigation into a topic of their choice. Some of the titles chosen were, “Can Scotland be well served by Renewable energy?”, “Internet, friend or foe?”, “Behavioural difficulties, nature or nurture?” and “Should Scotland be building more eco-friendly housing?”.

The top three winners will receive prizes at the School’s prize giving ceremony and entries of a geographical nature will also be entered in the Royal Scottish Geographical Society Competition.

This years winners are:
1st Gillian Anderson 2M

Room 4 Improvement
Inspired Writing

Scott A , Scott C, Arron, Jordan, Laura and Kyle are members of a group called Room 4 Improvement which is aimed at helping young people who are having some difficulties at school.
They work on achieving school targets and home targets.

They wrote to an assortment of people asking two questions:

Was there a time in your life when you managed to improve or change something for the better?

What happened and who helped you?

The letters they received were compiled and they have created a colourful, and really interesting booklet.
The contributers include Gordon Brown, Alex Salmond, Sir Jackie Stewart, Lorraine Kelly, Sir Tom Farmer,
Fiona Hyslop, Ricky Ross, Blythe Duff, Lorraine McIntosh and some local people including our own Miss Chapman.

Fiona McFetridge and Gavin Thomson
were chosen to represent Carluke High School at a recent visit to Auschwitz.

During the October week Fiona, Mr Falconer and I were offered the opportunity to go to Auschwitz with the Lessons From Auschwitz group. We left at 7AM for Krakow airport and then went to the concentration camps Auschwitz 1 and Auschwitz 2, (Birkenau). Auschwitz 1 resembles a small town with the red brick barracks arranged around the camp and the guard towers and barbed-wire fencing surrounding the camp. This calm atmosphere hides the inner menace that can only be seen by entering the many barracks which now holds ex prisoners’ possessions and explains the harsh lives lived by the victims. A few miles up the train tracks lies Auschwitz 2, Birkenau. The most striking aspect of the camp is the extent of the complex with many rows of huts stretched along the perimeter. Under the Nazi regime concentration camp inmates were systematically dehumanized, on entering, individuals lost all sense of identity; clothes, hair, possessions, and worst of all their family. At the end of our visit to Auschwitz, before we left the camp, we were each given a candle; and as we travelled back to the bus we placed our lit candles down on the railway as a mark of respect and remembrance for those who had died.
