Carluke pupils win Scottish Cup
Thursday 24th March 2011
Coatbridge High School
The Scottish Cup Final is a big deal and requires a big performance from those playing in it.
Carluke High School had 8 pupils involved, all hoping to have gold medals hanging round their necks at the end of the night.
Standing in their way was Volleyball heavy weight; Marr College. Marr had contested the previous 2 finals and were keen to make up for last year’s disappointment. Step forward Carluke High.
The game started off slowly as both sides looked to find some rhythm in their play and then Carluke took control of the game. Setters McLaughlin and Elder started to use the width of the court and this allowed Berry and McIntyre to exploit the gaps in the Marr block to great effect with some devastating examples of hitting. As Carluke took a strangle hold on the set, Mackenzie and Jones where introduced to the game and the boys saw the set out 25 – 16.
Clearly stung by what had happened in the first set, Marr upped their game and challenged Carluke from the service line. The game ebbed and flowed like this until Marr took some control over the net play and they closed the set out 17-25.
Set 3 and all to play for. Marr raced into a 4-1 lead after some strong service and were starting to take control. Carluke stopped them in their tracks. Some great defensive play and aggressive attacking play from Berry allowed Carluke to draw level. The game continued to flow back and forwards until Elder went to the service line and Carluke opened up a two point lead, 11 – 9. Carluke then passed well to guarantee a side out and a 12-10 lead.
McIntyre then served tactically to push Carluke into a 14-12 lead and then it happened; McIntyre passed to McLaughlin, who set the ball to Berry and the ball was dually dispatched onto the floor.
Cue court invasion!! Carluke 2 Marr 1.
