BGE

S1 – S3 Broad General Education

The Course

All first, second and third year pupils will undertake an English and Literacy course that focuses on the key components of Talking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

Reading and Writing are a particular focus and all pupils will be encouraged to read at home and to record this in their Reading Log at school.

Assessment

Formal assessment will take place regularly and work will be assessed using the department’s target setting sheets. Pupils will be encouraged to assess their own and each other’s work throughout the course of the session and this work will be stored in their ‘best work’ jotters.

Formal assessments will be stored in each pupil’s folio which will be kept by the class teacher – pupils can, of course, take work home to show their parents but they must be responsible for returning it to the class teacher.

Personal Reading

There is a strong focus on personal reading within the department and it is expected that all pupils in S1 and S2 will visit the school library regularly as part of their classwork. Pupils will have the opportunity to browse the extensive books available and should read for pleasure as part of their ongoing homework.

Pupils should record their reading in their reading logs.
