The History of Halbar House
The Tower of Hallbar is a five story defence tower located between Crossford and Braidwood which was built in the 16th century. The walls of the tower are 1.6 meters thick (5.25 ft) to ensure the structure could defend against enemies.
The name of Hallbar originated from the Gaelic word ‘bar’ which means height, therefor the meaning is ‘high hall’. The tower was renovated in 1998. Few major alterations were made to the tower’s structure, most of the work was to strengthen the walls and structure of the building.
The Tower of Hallbar was built because of a law that was put in place allowing those with land up to the value of 100 pounds could build a building on their land.
The Tower was originally built to protect the local population from invaders from the South, who threatened to invade their land.
Hallbar is owned by the Lockharts of Lee family, however in 1998 a Historic Buildings Trust agreed to restore and convert the tower to be used as holiday accommodation
Our house was named after Hallbar tower in 2006, however for an unknown reason our house is spelt as ‘Halbar’.
