Mathematics
Hello and welcome to Carluke High School Mathematics Department.
My name is Jim Anderson and I am the Principal Teacher of Mathematics.
I have been part of Carluke High School for over 30 years now and I am going nowhere!
I hope you will find the information below useful and your child has a good experience in our department.
We will endeavour to communicate with you through letters home, notes in jotters and formative assessment grids after assessments.
If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the school and ask for Mr Anderson, Faculty Head to resolve any issues you have regarding your son/daughter’s Maths education. We are here to help and I would encourage you to send your son/daughter to come and speak to his/her Maths teacher if they have difficulties. My door, (room B007) is always open first thing in the morning to help with homework issues.
The Mathematics Department at Carluke High School aims to provide a learning experience that challenges, stimulates and supports all pupils as they journey towards achieving their mathematical potential. We aim to provide all students with the necessary skills in Maths and Numeracy to equip them for life beyond school. We believe that every pupil who comes through our doors should leave with at least a pass in either N5 Maths or N5 Applications of Mathematics; for students this may be S4, S5 or S6. Many young people will then progress further to Higher and Advanced Higher.
The department comprises of a team of highly skilled, motivational teachers who work hard to create learning opportunities where all pupils can develop character, confidence, courage and kindness.
Homework, notes, revision material and booklets can all be found on Google Classroom for each class. Pupils will be given a code to join a class by their Maths teacher each year. If, for whatever reason, the student has difficulty accessing the materials, please do not hesitate to contact the school and we can arrange paper copies to go home.
BGE
All classes S1-S3 will be broadband set and follow a broad general education in Mathematics based on the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. Pupils will start in either a 3rd Level class following our S1 Red course or a 2nd Level class following our Blue course based on their Primary reports.
This pattern is then extended into S2 and S3 as can be seen from the table below.
Senior Phase
In the senior phase we offer the following courses:
- National 3 Applications of Mathematics
- National 4 Applications of Mathematics
- National 5 Applications of Mathematics
- National 6 Higher Applications of Mathematics
- National 5 Mathematics
- National 6 Higher Mathematics
- National 7 Advanced Higher Mathematics
Progression Routes
S3 Progression
The majority of pupils who followed the 4th Level + Extension Purple course should be recommended for National 5 Mathematics in S4 then Higher Maths in S5. Some pupils, for example, those who followed the purple course in S3 may choose or be recommended for the alternative route of National 5 Applications of Maths in S4 then Higher Applications of Maths in S5.
Pupils who follow the Lavender course in S3 will move on to N5 Applications of Maths in S4 then Higher Applications of Maths in S5.
The majority of pupils who followed the 3rd and 4th Level Orange course should be recommended for National 4 Applications of Mathematics in S4 then National 5 Applications of Maths in S5.
S4 Progression
Students in S4 following N4 Applications of Maths should have already achieved N3 Applications of Maths by the end of S3.
Students in S4 following N5 Applications of Maths should have already achieved N4 Applications of Maths by the end of S3.
Students in S4 following N5 Mathematics should have already achieved N4 Mathematics by the end of S3.
Mathematics versus Applications of Mathematics
We now offer our S4 the opportunity to complete an alternative Mathematical course called Applications of Mathematics at National 5 with progression to Higher level in this subject.
An Application of Mathematics course is more meaningful for some of our young people and focuses on skills that are required for life. This course, at National 3, 4, 5 and Higher levels, explores the applications of mathematical techniques and skills in everyday situations, including financial matters, statistics and measurement. The skills, knowledge and understanding in this course also supports learning in other curricular areas, such as Technology, Health and Wellbeing, Science and Social Studies.
Our S1/2/3 Blue, White, Yellow and Lavender courses are geared more towards pupils leading to National 5 Applications of Mathematics.
S3 pupils who find algebra and trigonometry challenging are encouraged to follow the Applications of Mathematics route.
Once the student achieves an A or B pass at National 5 Applications of Maths in S4, they can then progress to Higher Applications of Mathematics or opt for a lateral pathway to study National 5 Mathematics with future progression to Higher Mathematics in S6 if desired.
Overall Progression Routes
The table below summarises the progression route from BGE into the Senior Phase.
